Caught: Man with concealed weapon stops break-in suspect

A television news crew from WFLA was en route to another story yesterday evening when they happened to pass a man pointing a gun at another man in front of a church in what might have looked at first glance like a holdup. When police arrived, though, they determined that the man with the gun was a maintenance worker holding at bay a man suspected of attempting to break into the church.

Reporter Lindsey Mastis writes that the maintenance worker atFirst Baptist Church in Tampa decided to carrya concealed weapon with him when he went to board up the church doors,aftertheyhad been breached earlier in the evening, causing an estimated $4,000 in damage. The suspect returned to the church and was held at gunpoint until police arrived.

John Novobylski, 23, ofIllinois, facesa felony charge of criminal mischief.
