They Said Their Baby Was Missing. Then The Police Looked Under Their Couch.

One of the most horrifying things that can happen to a parent is having their child go missing.

The frantic worry can be all-consuming, and you never know when (or if) your baby will come back home. Waiting and not knowing is so hard, especially when you’ve looked everywhere you can think of already. That’s allegedly what the parents of 16-month-old Semaj Crosby said they were going through when they couldn’t find her. They called the police to help, but what they found is even more disturbing.

Police searched the home for Semaj Crosby, and they found her underneath a couch. She had died there with no visible injuries.

Police are conducting a “suspicious death” investigation, and new reports show that the conditions inside the home where the little girl was found were completely disgusting.

“The entire structure appeared unsanitary because of the heavily soiled carpets, walls, garbage and [it] contains a serious degree of filth,” an inspector noted in her report.

The inspector also described the back door and electrical panel blocked by “strollers, black garbage bags, toys, clothing and containers.” The home was determined to be “unfit for human occupancy.”

Semaj’s mother, Sheri Gordon, isn’t saying much about the pictures. Her attorney says she is distraught over the death of her daughter and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Shockingly, the Department of Children and Family Services had visited the filthy home just three hours before the baby girl disappeared, and they noted no hazards or safety concerns. DCFS is also investigating.

The autopsy has not determined a cause of death. Because there was no obvious trauma, police are hoping lab tests will reveal why Semaj died.

Police are still interviewing family members and witnesses, but no one has been arrested yet.
